To the editor:

With the focus on technology, I guess it is not important to maintain the basics. I'm not referring to curriculum and instruction, I'm writing about keeping the students and teachers in the ninth grade academy safe and dry. Apparently after it rains, water regularly seeps into the building; damaging ceiling tiles, textbooks, and potentially the technology that everyone has become so enamored of. Last time there was a major rain storm, a number of wet ceiling tiles were found either sagging above or having already collapsed onto several student desks. Good thing it rained at night. Now ceiling tiles are missing in several classrooms because there are no more tiles in storage. In addition, there is a strange smell in some of the classrooms. This makes me concern as a parent as to whether the school is safe for my child and what impact this environment has on his health. I have been told that the roof will be dealt with during Christmas break (whether you believe this or not). Unfortunately, something needs to be done sooner before anyone gets hurt or sick.
