Willis must be accountable too

It was good to see county Board of Commissioners Chairman J.D. Willis establish the guidelines for the Board of Education in reporting how they spend the $340,000. It was especially gratifying that he has such a strong focus on the Board's responsibility to show accountability for whatever they spend of taxpayer's money. It is comforting to know that as the chairman of the Board of County Commissioners, he has a clear understanding of the importance of displaying this accountability to the taxpaying public.

With that in mind, the taxpayers of Scotland County call on him to do the same thing that he is requesting of the school board. We would request that he make public the complete record of the money spent at his Highlands Charter School -- including the money provided by the North Carolina and the $760,176.49 provided to his school by the taxpayers of Scotland County. This should include, of course, his payroll -- including any member of his family who received money. It should also include any payments of rent on his buildings and other building-associated costs such as insurance.

And just in case he should decide that it is none of the taxpayer's business as to how he spent $760,176.49 of their money, then he no longer has the moral authority to tell the school board or anyone else in the county how to spend county money. Which means the time has come for him to resign as the main keeper of the taxpayer's purse.

We await his response.
