Lady Scots beat Swett

PEMBROKE - The Scotland High School varsity volleyball team travelled to Pembroke on Thursday night to take on Purnell Swett to open up conference play and came out with a win.

The Scots (10-0, 1-0) won in three straight with the scores of 25-15, 25-19 and 25-21 respectively.

Since Head Coach David Barnes took over the volleyball program at Scotland eight years ago Barnes has never lost to Purnell Sweet. Barnes and the Fighting Scots went to Purnell Swett with a 14 game winning streak and turned it into a 15 winning streak.

"Purnell Sweet had a bulls eyes on us tonight," Barnes said. "But we came out on top and that feels good to open up conference with a win."

Purnell Swett hosted it's feeder program night, which hosted the area elementary and middle schools to get a chance to watch Purnell Swett play Scotland.

"It was a very, very load and aggressive atmosphere tonight," Barnes said. "It was great to see the girls play against a tough environment and play through tough times at Purnell Swett."

Individually, Sarah Laviner had 18 serving points leading the Scots in serving. Laviner served the ball 24 times and only had one serving error on the night. She also came up with five aces for the Scots.

Josephine Yang and Jessica Bowen followed Laviner with six serving points each against Purnell Swett respectively.

McLean was the leading passer for the Scots with 19 passes out of 22 passes going to target for Scotland.

Whitney Campbell finished the night with 13 passes out of 15 passes going to target.

Whitney Campbell was the leading hitter for the Scots with 17 kills with only four out nets and one block at the net.

Taborah Hollingsworth had seven kills with only two out nets and four blocks for the Scots.

Laviner and Bowen each had five kills at the net.

Yang had 10 defensive digs while Campbell had had defensive digs for the Scots.

As a team, the Scots had 75 serves with only four serving errors along with nine aces.

The team also had 77 passes to target out of 101 attempts.

The Scots will host league foe Pinecrest on Tuesday. The game will start around 6 p.m.

"We are expecting a good match against Pine Crest," Barnes said. "It should be a good game for fans to come put and watch."

JV

The Scotland High School jayvee volley ball team won it's match also giving Purnell Swett's jayvee team it's first lose on the season.

The Scots (9-1) beat Purnell Swett with the scores of 25-22 and 25-22 respectively.

Sarah Cross had eight serving points along with aces for the Scots to lead the team.

Courtney Collins followed Cross with six serving point with three aces of her own.

Greta Griswold had four kills while Caroline Prigden had three kills at the net.

The Scots will host league foe Pinecrest on Tuesday. The game will start at 5 p.m.
