The Fighting Scots varsity soccer team had its four game winning streak broken on Wednesday night at Pate Stadium in a defensive oriented game.
Although the Southern Lee Tiger beat Scotland High 2-0, the game looked much closer than it seemed, score wise anyway.
"I thought the guys played well against a very talented Southern Lee team," Head Coach Colin McDavid said. "I'm glad my boys got to see such good talent so early so if we make the playoffs, we know what we are going up against."
The Scots (4-4-1) played hard the whole game but were not able to capitalize on key counter attacks that would end with goal kicks throughout the first and second halves.
The Tigers out shot the Scots 19 to four on Wednesday night. Southern Lee out shot the Scots 11 to one in the first half. Then half eight to three in the second.
Senior John Yarborough got the start for the Scots in goal. He would end up with a game high 10 saves, seven of which came in the first half.
The Tigers got on the board early in the first half, just nine minutes into the game. A Southern Lee forward recieved a centering pass from a midfielder about 30-yards out, turned, and shot the ball past Yarborough far post. The goal would be the game winner for the Southern Lee Tigers.
After the goal, the Scots defense buckled down and held the Tigers without a goal for the rest of the first half. Southern Lee would be up 1-0 at the half.
Junior forward Balyn Krout would get the best chance to tie the game up in the 50th minute on a break away. He was up against a Southern Lee defender but decided to pass rather than shoot to Sophomore forward Evgheny Khandoga, but Khandoga was not ready for the pass and another Tiger defender stole the ball away inside the 18-yard box.
Through the first 20 minutes of the second half, the Scots held the Tigers without a goal. In the 60th minute, the Tigers received a free kick from a foul from a Scotland defender. The Tigers would drive the ball into the 18-yard box from 40-yards out where Yarborough would get a hand on the ball, but the ball deflected into the goal. Southern Lee would go up 2-0 and never looked back.
McDavid thought his defense played well the whole game.
"You have to give it to our defense tonight," McDavid said. "Although we gave up two goals tonight, I think the guys stepped up defensively."
The Fighting Scots will open up conference play at Purnell Swett on next Wednesday at 7 p.m.
