The town of Wagram and Scotland County Parks and Recreation are getting canned by the Laurinburg Downtown Revitalization Committee.

The trash cans in downtown Laurinburg are being replaced and the LDRC wants to give their used cans to Wagram and Parks and Recreation.

"The city of Laurinburg is putting new trash cans downtown that are going to be less labor intensive for their workers," LDRC President Terry Gallman said. "The LDRC owns these trash cans so we are six of them to the town of Wagram and the rest to Scotland Parks and Recreation to put on the fields."

Wagram Councilman Hyder Massey, Jr. says the town of 800 is looking forward to receiving the trash cans.

"We don't have any cans at all on the street and this is going to be a plus for us. We are probably going to put them on Main Street, which is a short area, and that should pretty much take care of the whole town."

Shannon Newton, director of Parks and Recreation, said the county department already has plans for the metal cans.

"We are really excited. We have some locations where we still have wooden trash cans with metal liners so we are going to be replacing those around the county. We are looking for other sites where we can put them, possibly at Scotland Yard Playground."

The new trash cans go in Thursday at a cost of about $8,000.
