Laurinburg motorcyclist killed

A Laurinburg man was killed early Sunday after his 2003 Harley-Davidson struck a pedestrian crossing just outside of Pembroke, according to the State Highway Patrol.

The patrol report said Ronn Deese, 38, of 429 Fairley St., Laurinburg was traveling at about 90 mph in a 45-mph zone when his bike hit the crossing. The crossing is intended to help students at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke cross Prospect Road.

The report said the vehicle went airborne after striking the crossing.

The accident occurred at 1:29 a.m. just outside of the town limits. The report said that Deese was not wearing a helmet.

He was pronounced dead at Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton. The report said that results of a toxicology report are pending.

The motorcycle was destroyed.
