The Scots will travel to Bennettsville tonight to take on border rival Marlboro County High School. The Bulldogs are coming off of a win in their season opener against Cheraw.
Quarterback Elliot Alford and running back Josh Blue combined for over 300 yards rushing in Marlboro County’s 41-26 season-opener victory against Cheraw High School.
Marlboro County (1-0) will be without senior running back Kris Pankey who suffered a career-ending neck injury during in a August 21 scrimmage against Myrtle Beach.
Alford finished the game against Cheraw with 116 yards rushing. Blue had a career night against Cheraw, rushing for 215 yards in his first varsity start.
Scotland Head Coach Chip Williams hopes his team will play intensity against Marlboro County than the team did against New Hanover.
"I'll be surprised if we don't play well and be a lot more intense," Williams said. "I was disappointed we didn't play with a lot of intensity against New Hanover but that is old news."
Williams said his team worked to improve all parts of their game during this weeks practices.
"We needed to get better," he said.
Williams hopes coming into the game against Marlboro that his team won't need a boost from the coaching staff.
"It's a rivalry, so you don't have to do a whole lot of peep talking," he said. "The biggest thing, we have to have a little more confidence during the game against Marlboro County than we did against New Hanover."
The rivalry between Scotland and Marlboro ended last year with 20-13 Marlboro win. Williams hopes his team will come out on top this year.
"Any rivalry you get into you want to ultimately win," he said. "Last year Marlboro beat us, and this year we want to retaliate."
Williams said that the quarterback position is basically Kwashawn Quick's job for the taking.
"Kwashawn looks to be stepping up a little bit more in that situation," he said. "We are trying to find some other responsibilities for Caison, but we are not afraid to put Caison in the quarterback position."
Quick had a huge game – with his legs – at Seventy-First two weeks ago, getting 137 yards and two TDs on just 10 carries but was not able to duplicate that success against the NHHS defense. Quick was sacked twice and had a 4-yard loss on his only run. Quick was 4-of-10 passing for 25 yards.
Sophomore Tony McRae was Scotland was the leading rusher with 23 yards on six carries against New Hanover. Josh Quirk led the Scots in receiving with two catches for 23 yards. SHS back-up quarterback Caison Murphy was 2-of-5 for 23 yards during last Friday's game.
