The Scotland High School varsity football team (1-0) is coming off a huge season-opening win against the defending 4-A state champion Seventy-First

Falcons in Fayetteville.

The Scots will take a two-hour trip tonight to take on New Hanover High School in Wilmington. New Hanover is coming off a 7-6 season which ended in the second round of the state playoffs in 2008.

New Hanover is in the Mid-Eastern 4-A Conference which hosts teams such as Ashley High, Hoggard High, Wilmington-Laney High, New Bern High and J.H. Greenville Rose High School.

The Scots will look to hold off the Wildcats, who are coming off a win of their own in their first game of the season. New Hanover, which has 30 seniors on the team, beat Goldsboro 42-6 last week.

The Scots held Seventy-First to 144 yards on 39 carries and 47 passing yards with 191 yards in total offense last Friday night; the SHS defense will look to build off that tonight in Wilmington.

Defensive coordinator Bo Williams said that the defense played fundamentally sound football, which kept Seventy-First off the field.

"Everybody did what they were supposed to do with their assignments," he said.

Williams said that the team doesn't change philosophies on defense.

"We don't change philosophies from week-to-week and we try to play technique football."

Offensive coordinator Wes Mattera credited the defense for the offensive success against Seventy-First.

"Coach Williams and our defensive coaches had a great game play Friday night," Mattera said. "The defense took over and gave our offense some good field position, and the three scores we got were a direct credit to them."

Mattera said that the quarterback situation is still not resolved for the Scots.

"It's going to be a constant battle here for the next couple weeks as who plays well, who doesn't turn the ball over, who makes the right reads, and who becomes a field general for us," he said. "It is still up in the air and it is a daily competition between Kwashawn Quick and Caison Murphy."

Mattera said that the Scots will split time between Quick and Murphy tonight.

"Whoever has the hot hand will be in there at the end for us," he said.

Quick had 10 carries, for 137 yards with two touchdowns while Murphy was 1-of-5 passing for six yards and an interception, and he ran three times for one yard against Seventy-First.
