The Scotland High School Volleyball team (3-0) kept up with their winning ways by defeating Terry Sanford in three straight sets on Monday evening.

The Lady Scots won the sets 25-11, 25-16, and 25-12 respectively.

Terry Sanford has been very dominating in the Two Rivers conference the past four years, according to Head Coach David Barnes.

"They are always the top one or two in their conference," Barnes said. "Today we handled them pretty good with really good serving, which kept them out of their offense."

Keeping the pressure on Terry Sanford gave the Scots a lot of easy balls to handle throughout the game, Barnes said.

In the second set, Terry Sanford would come into the set and earned the teams only lead of the day with a score of 10-8. After the Bulldogs took the lead

in the third set, Sarah Laviner and the Scots showed just how good they are in their serving game.

Laviner led the Scots to 14 straight points before Terry Sanford scored their first point.

"Sarah has a great arm," Barnes said. "We work a whole lot on moving the serve around, and Sarah is one of the best we have at being able to serve at whatever zone we call."

"Sarah is really good at serving the short ball, and she was serving the short ball," Barnes said. "She just kept them out of their offense with her serving in the last set."

As a team, the Lady Scots served close to 97 percent.

"We served 77 times and 75 were in play and aggressive serves," Barnes said.

Barnes said that serving is a big part of the team's game.

"Serving is a huge part of our game," he said. "To be a good volleyball player, you must be good at serving and passing."

He said the team works hard every day at ball control.

"We take the first 45 minutes of practice to practice on ball control, whether it be passing or serving," he said.

As a team, the Lady Scots passed the ball well too, according to Barnes.

"The girls passed the ball at 77 percent today," he said. "We ask them to pass at at least 67 percent, so the girls were 10 percent over their goal."

The girls hit 55 out of 71 passes to target on Monday evening which comes down to 55 good passes and 16 bad passes.

Individually, Sarah Laviner had 19 serving points and 5 kills at the net with a hitting percentage of .556.

Whitney Campbell had 10 serving points, 15 kills, and 3 blocks at the net with a hitting percentage of .407.

"To hit over .200 is good," Coach Barnes said. "To hit .400 or above is unbelievably good; Sarah and Whitney got it done today."

Josephine Yang, who had nine serving points, was also the leading passer for the Scots with 21 passes out of 24 attempts to target.

Jessica Bowen had three blocks at the net respectively.

The Lady Scots play Jack Britt in Fayetteville on Wednesday starting at 5 p.m.

"We are looking forward to playing on Wednesday at Jack Britt," Barnes said.
