If you have ever driven past the winding course of the Lumber River and wanted to take a closer look at its primal beauty, then an opportunity to do so may be yours next week.

On Aug. 27, Ranger Ronald Anderson will lead a group on a guided trip down the river by canoe. Participants will depart from the Chalk Banks access area of the Lumber River State Park in Wagram at 10:30 a.m.

The tour will last two to three hours.

"We will cover approximately two to four miles of the river, during which time I will be pointing out foliage, scenery, and any wildlife we may encounter such as waterfowl and reptiles," Anderson said.

Anderson stresses that advance registration is required due to limited space.

"We will have spaces for about 12 to 14 people, so it is important to sign up early," he said.

Anderson encourages participants to bring insect repellent, snacks, drinks, sunscreen, and rain gear, and any other personal items they may need, such as medication. Life jackets will be provided.

"Keep in mind that your personal items will probably get wet," Anderson said.

To register, contact Anderson at 910-628-4564. All participants must be able to swim.
