"I felt good (composing the poem)," Penny said. "Because of the hard work Mr. Evers had done, I wanted to bring that out for everyone to notice."
Evers, a civil rights activist from Mississippi, was murdered in 1963 by a member of the Ku Klux Klan. Memorialized by artists such as musician Bob Dylan and writer Eudora Welty, Evers was buried in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.

Remembrance of Mr. Evers
by LeeNique Penny
I heard it once in a movie
And the words came to play
"That someone had to do what he did
That's why he was born in today"
He made a powerful impact
A difference in the world
Which is why an assassin's bullet took hi life
An attempt to prevent that stepping stone
To conquer the challenges he faced
Was such a moving feat
For he was a member of the NAACP
Which is how he liked it to be
Born near Decatur, Mississippi in the month of July
Attended Alcorn College
His goal was to soar beyond the sky
One of the many martyrs of the Civil Rights Movement
A wonderful man he truly was
His name is Medgar Wiley Evers
A true leader, yes he was
And a true leader he remains
Through his many infinite endeavors
His name will echo forEver.
