The purpose of the program is to instill leadership qualities in participants by exposing them to many different facets of life in Scotland County. Participants of Junior Leadership will meet monthly during school hours to learn about county history, city government, education, industry, and local non-profit agencies. The program will begin with a team-building workshop, and end with a trip to Raleigh to meet with local legislators.
Civic responsibility is another aspect of the program, and students must complete 20 hours of individual community service. The group will also need to complete a community service project as a team.
The most exciting addition, though, is the opportunity for one participant to attend the Shelton Leadership Challenge. Named after General Hugh Shelton, the Shelton Challenge is a six day experience to help students expand their knowledge and skills of what it takes to be a leader. Students have the opportunity to participate in team-building activities, low and high ropes courses, service projects, and nightly activities to get to know others participating in the program. The program is administered through North Carolina State University, and sessions are held in Charlotte and Raleigh.
Junior Leadership Scotland is open to any high school sophomore or junior that lives in Scotland County.
