Scotland County schools Associate Superintendent Rick Watkins is expected to step down on Sept. 1.
Watkins announced at a recent principals' meeting that he was retiring to take a job with Wingate University, a school official said.
Watkins, who has been with the Scotland system for about two years, could not be reached for comment.
