Margaret Beales, familiarly known to her many friends as “Meg”, died Friday, July 24 at Scotia Village in Laurinburg of a combination of physical causes. She was 89 years of age, just seven weeks shy of her 90th year, which she had high hopes of reaching. In fact, just failing to reach it was one of the very few goals this accomplished lady did not attain.

“Meg” was one of five offspring of Esther Davis and Edward B. Haskins of McKenney, Va. Her father was a hero, saving two girls from drowning. In doing so, he suffered a heart attack and died and was awarded the Carnegie Medal of Heroism.

A gifted needlewoman, her works have been on display at many venues. Her work in crewel embroidery and needlepoint has inspired others. With an exquisite eye for color, she at one time taught others the art, including her daughter and granddaughters. She was co-chairperson of a week-long “Pilgrimage to the Sacred Arts” event in Pittsburgh. Some years later she was presented the Benefactors Award in Chestnut Hill. She also served as president of the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She was an accomplished tennis and racquet ball enthusiast well past her 70’s.

“Meg” Beales loved to entertain and was a gracious hostess. Her friends were legion as she moved with her husband and family over 25 times. She was referred to by an intimate as “A gallant lady, always ready with a quick wit and a ready smile.”

She leaves three children, Diane B. Lobaugh of Baroda, Mich., Jonathan T. Beales of Smyrna, Ga. and Jefferson D. Beales of Philadelphia, Pa.; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Her husband of 62 years, James A. G. Beales, remains bereft.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 28, at St. David’s Episcopal Church, Cheraw, S.C., with interment at noon, Wednesday, July 29, at the Haskins family plot in McKenney, Va.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to St. David’s Episcopal Church, General Fund, 420 Market Street, Cheraw, SC 29520.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Norton Funeral Home, Cheraw, S.C.
