No replacement has yet been named by Gov. Beverly Perdue to fill the unexpired term of Scotland County representative on the state Board of Transportation.

G. R. Kindley Jr.resigned on July 15 from the NCDOT Division 8 seat.

“No replacement has been named for Mr. Kindley’s spot, but the governor will look for the best qualified candidate to join the board,” said Chrissy Pearson, press secretary for the Governor.

His replacement would come from one of the counties in the division: Scotland, Richmond, Hoke, Randolph, Chatham, Lee, Moore and Montgomery.

Kindley said he doubted a representative would be named from Richmond. He held the division seat for 16 years and four months.

Kindley had been appointed to a term which was to end in 2011. He said he had considered resigning earlier this year and had talked with Perdue about it, but was asked to remain until a replacement could be announced.

She recently announced several new board members, and Kindley said he was ready to step down. He wanted more personal time for himself.

He thought more board members might be appointed in August. Kindley said he had no idea who the governor might be considering to fill his former seat.

When Kindley was appointed to the DOT Board in 1993, the Highway 74 Bypass of Rockingham and Hamlet was far from reality. Construction was slated to start in 2000.

Instead the project was pushed up and it was finished in 2000.
