Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church officiated by the Rev. Dr. Robert Dendy. Visitation will precede the service from 1-2 p.m. at the church Heritage Hall. Burial with military honors will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Men’s Friendly Bible Class and the American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Roberta “Bobby” Stewart; two sons, Rob Stewart and wife Judy of Fayetteville and John Stewart of Maxton; a brother, Gene Stewart of Maxton; a sister, Kathryn S. Bowman of Aberdeen; two grandsons; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Born Feb. 28, 1923 in Robeson County, he was a son of the late Will and Elizabeth McFarland Stewart. He served with the U.S. Army Air Corps in the European theater in World War II. Following the war he worked as a farmer and in the lumber business.
Bill was a former mayor of Maxton, a member of the Maxton Post of the American Legion, a member of the Maxton Masonic Lodge, and an active member of the First Presbyterian Church where he was also a choir member.
