Gibson candidates file for election

A trio of candidates from Gibson filed for election on Monday.

They included Lula Adelle Cottingham and Charles Freddie Webb, each an incumbent commissioner, and Mack “Pete” Wilkins.

The position of Gibson mayor is also up for reelection.

In addition to Cottingham and Webb, incumbents are Mayor Ronnie Hudson and Commissioner Thompson Jones. The mayor serves a two-year term while commissioners serve four-year terms. Filing fees are $5 for each position.

On the initial filing day for county offices, five candidates officially stated their intentions to seek elective office; those filing from Laurinburg included city council member Rembert DeBerry and District 1 challenger Hattie Ray. Herbert Rainer's District 1 position is up for reelection, as is the District 2 seat of Councilman Tommy Parker.

In East Laurinburg, where all three at-large commissioner seats and the mayor's position are up for reelection, Commissioners Marshall Stevens and Robert Lee Wallace filed on the first day. Incumbents are Mayor Randy Miller, Marshall Stevens, Robert Wallace and Earlene Fowler; Miller has announced that he will not seek reelection. The filing fee for mayor of East Laurinburg is $18 and is $12 for commissioner.

Positions of Wagram mayor and three council members are also up for reelection. Incumbent Councilman Robert McLaughlin filed on the initial day; in addition to McLaughlin, other incumbents include Mayor Milton W. Farmer, Hyder Massey and Jackie Laviner. The two receiving the most votes for council will serve four-year terms while the third place finisher will serve for two years. Filing fees for Wagram are $5.

According to the Scotland County Board of Elections, local candidates have until July 17 to file for 15 positions countywide.
