Laurinburg 10-U softball All Stars 5th in state

The Laurinburg Optimist 10-U All-Star softball team finished fifth out of 11 teams at the ENC Babe Ruth state tournament last week.

Laurinburg opened tournament play with a 6-2 loss to Pitt County on Wednesday. Laurinburg's leading hitter in the game was Kenleigh Callahan, who went 2-for-3.

Darrian Ivey and Jasmine Jessie were both 1-for-2. Callahan was the losing pitcher after giving up seven hits and three earned runs. She also struck out eight batters.

Laurinburg roared back with a 17-0 win over Northview-Deep River on Thursday morning. All 12 players on the Optimist All-Star roster scored at least one run.

Ivey went 3-for-3 and socked a pair of doubles, Kelsey Smith was 2-for-2 and Haven Birchfield went 2-for-3 with a double. Jenna Ridge was also 2-for-3, and Cameron Sharpe and Megan Parker were both 1-for-1.

Sharpe, Ivey and Birchfield combined on a four-inning perfect game. The trio recorded 10 strikeouts and two ground-ball outs against Northview.

Laurinburg took its second win on Thursday by a score of 12-1 over Down East. Alexis Britt was 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the Optimist All Stars. Parker was 2-for-2 and Birchfield, Ivey, Callahan, Sharpe and Jessie were all 2-for-3. Taylor McQueen went 1-for-1 and Morgan Parker added a hit for the victors.

Callahan struck out 10 and threw a four-inning one-hitter to get the win.

Laurinburg was only knocked from the tournament following a 5-3 loss to Washington on Friday. Ivey was 3-for-3 with a double to lead the Laurinburg offense, Callahan and Megan Parker were both 2-for-3 and Maggie Laviner went 1-for-2. Sharpe struck out five and gave up five earned runs on seven hits in the loss.
