The win puts Scotland at 6-5 with three games remaining in the regular season and avenges a 14-8 loss the Scots endured at South View on June 18.
Scotland lost 11-8 at Southern Lee on Tuesday night (see story below), and the young Scots have had a bumpy first season of play in the Coastal Carolina Scholastic League. Two teams from each eight-team division make the postseason in the CCL, and Scotland will probably need to finish 9-5 to have any chance of getting in; the team took the first step with Wednesday's win.
"I think we had a really good approach today," said Scotland assistant coach Joe Critcher, who, along with assistant Jamie Coleman, managed the team in head coach Tommy Britt's absence. "Last night, we played pretty poorly, made a lot of errors.
"The guys came out early today, took some extra batting practice. I think the rain bothered South View a lot more than it did us."
"The kids really wanted to win. They know our backs are against the wall after the loss on Tuesday. Now, we get to play Richmond and Pinecrest next week, and if we win those, we may be able to sneak into the playoffs."
Rising senior Damian Burr continues his impressive summer season for Scotland. Burr held South View to a pair of hits and one unearned run in five innings to get the win. He walked two, hit one and struck out five Tigers.
Burr also accounted for three of Scotland's eight hits, going 3-for-3 with a two-run double in the fourth inning. Catcher Trae Phillips was 1-for-2 with an RBI single, and Cody Marcure went 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored.
Josh Collins was 1-for-1 with a sacrifice bunt from the nine-hole, Matt Radford went 1-for-2 with a pair of runs scored from the No. 8 spot in the order, and lead-off man Chase Bullock went 1-for-3 and scored a run.
Scotland trailed 1-0 after South View scored its only run in the top of the first inning. The Scots took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the bottom half. Bullock singled and scored on a wild pitch, and Marcure singled and scored on an RBI groundout by Greg Jorgensen.
Matt Radford singled and scored on a wild pitch in the second inning to make the score 3-1. Burr singled and pinch runner John Yarborough swiped second and third before scoring on Phillips' RBI hit to center field to put the Scots up 4-1 in the third frame.
Scotland's last two runs came in the fourth inning, as Radford reached on an error, Marcure walked and both runners scored when Burr sent a double over the rightfielder's head and to the fence.
Scotland hosts Richmond on Monday at 7 p.m.
