Maxton and Laurinburg firework displays drew hundreds of residents to celebrate Independence Day.
Maxton's event was more than just a fireworks display. It was a festival with vendors, live entertainment and a number of activities. Children competed in watermelon-seed spitting contests, sack races and hula-hooping competitions.
Most attendees waited until closer to dusk before coming out.
The day started with under a hundred people, but more 500 people were in the park by sunset.
Hundreds of people also crowded into Pate Stadium at Scotland High School to view the fireworks show sponsored by Scotland County and the city of Laurinburg.
Interim City Manager Dee Hammond said it is difficult to estimate how many actually watch the fireworks display as many area residents have found places outside of Pate Stadium to view the fireworks, such as houses of friends or areas off main roads.
From the stadium, cars could be seen parked in clusters on West Rail Road Street, Scotland High School Drive and North Turnpike Road. People were gathered beside the vehicles or laying on the hoods of their cars to watch the fireworks.
Children acted as back-seat commentators in the stands, punctuating the show with statements like "holy moly," "that one's going to be big" and "this must be the finale."
