Looking for a special way to recognize Independence Day? If so, the town of Maxton, the Deercroft community, and the city of Laurinburg/Scotland County will all offer a variety of fourth of July celebrations for the public this weekend.

The town of Maxton will bring in the holiday July 3 with a celebration from 4 to 9:30 p.m. at Beacham Park on South Austin Street. Food, games for children and adults, live entertainment, a tribute to veterans, and fireworks will be among the attractions.

"This celebration is one of the greater days we have here in Maxton," event chairperson James McEachin said. "We will have live entertainment from Cherl Thompson, Darryl Emanuel, the Strong Family, and the H.E. Edwards Choir from Shiloh Baptist Church, we will have lots of games for children, and we offer some of the best competition in horseshoes and checkers around. Some of the checker players, who come from the surrounding areas to compete, are state ranked. We will have lots of great food and craft vendors, and a professional fireworks display at the end of the day. We invite everyone to come out and enjoy a great time with us."

During the morning of July 4, the Deercroft community will celebrate the holiday with their third annual combination Fourth of July and Firewise Community Day starting at 9 a.m. The event will begin with a parade of golf carts and bicycles decorated for the occasion.

"Smokey the Bear, fire trucks from Spring Hill, EMS vehicles, vintage cars and more will be on hand, including childrens' games and information about the Firewise community program," event coordinator Suzanne Allen said. "We will recognize our first honorees for the Firewise Home of the Quarter, Ken and Pat Durling, and we will honor the Firewise Chainsaw King and the Firewise Pinecone Queen. We would love for the public to come enjoy the parade."

On the evening of July 4, the city of Laurinburg and Scotland County will host their annual fireworks display at Scotland High School's Pate Stadium. Members of the honor guard from the Laurinburg Fire and Police Departments will raise the flag, with the national anthem sung by the audience. Scotland Band Boosters will sell refreshments. Gates will open at 8 p.m. with fireworks to begin between 9:15 and 9:30.

"We will be exhibiting $11,000 worth of fireworks with 751 projectiles fired into the air," Interim City Manager Dee Hammond said. "It should be a great time. On behalf of the city of Laurinburg, I want to invite everyone to come out and enjoy a fabulous fireworks display."

Laurinburg Police Chief John Evans stressed that no alcohol is allowed on school grounds.

"We will be strictly enforcing this policy," he said.

A no drugs or alcohol rule is in place for each event.
