Lucas' father, Jimmy Glover, moved to Laurinburg when he was around 10, and lived here until he was in his early 20s, according to another Laurinburg native, George Norfleet.
Norfleet said that he and Jimmy Glover went to Laurinburg High School before the schools consolidated, and the two of them graduated together from Scotland High School in 1969. Jimmy Glover did not play sports, but was a part of the school band during his high school days.
Jimmy Glover would leave Laurinburg and eventually open Glover Painting Company in Greenville, S.C., where he would raise Lucas, an adopted son. Lucas Glover was a relative unknown in the world of golf before he outlasted a leaderboard that included Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods and David Duval to win the U.S. Open on Monday.
"Jimmy called me up yesterday from Times Square; they had their, I'll call it their entourage, with them," said Norfleet. "Jimmy was the best man in my wedding."
