But school board members have declined to publicly release the names or confirm that the job may go to Walter Jackson, assistant superintendent for administration and technology in neighboring Robeson or Rick Stout, assistant superintendent for finance and personnel of the Alamance-Burlington School System.
"I can't give out any names," said Jimmy Bennett chairman of the Scotland County Board of Education. "Its all confidential, or at least its supposed to be."
Bennett said he expects an announcement to be made at a special meeting Wednesday at 5 p.m. at the A.B. Gibson Center.
While the search has been narrowed to two candidates, Bennett was hesitant to say someone has been picked.
"Its got to be voted on Wednesday night," Bennett said. "We will announce the next superintendent (then),"
Vice Chair Mary Evans and Board member Darwin "Duke" Williams declined to comment at all on the school board search.
Phone calls were not returned by the other five board members and neither Stout nor Jackson could be reached for comment. Jackson is a former principal at Townsend Middle School.
Superintendent Shirley Prince announced at the board's March meeting that she would retire from the school system to take a job as executive director of the North Carolina Principals and Assistant Principals Association. Her retirement will be effective June 30.
Last summer, Prince was one of two finalists for the Guilford County superintendent's job. The position went to Maurice Green, former chief operating officer and deputy superintendent of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.
