Investigators say they have solved the case of body found outside a Maxton store.

They have accused Kenneth Roderick Chavis of fatally beating his ex-wife and leaving her for dead inside a vehicle parked at a convenience store in April. Chavis was arrested late Friday morning.

The 45-year-old Pembroke man wis charged with second-degree murder. He is accused of killing 59-year-old Gracie Locklear, of 75 Baltimore St., according to Sheriff Kenneth Sealey.

Sealey said that Chavis was arrested at his home at about 11:25 a.m.

He was placed in the Robeson County jail where he is being held under a $1 million bond.

On April 26, Locklear’s body was found inside her 2000 Chevrolet Blazer outside of the Chief’s Mini-Mart on Jacobs Road. A customer who passed the vehicle saw Locklear inside and told a store employee that the woman appeared to be dead. A 911 call was placed at about 1:30 p.m.

The employee later told investigators that the vehicle had been sitting in the dirt parking lot before the store opened at noon. She said she simply thought someone had parked the SUV after running out of gas and didn’t think to look inside.

The sheriff’s report said Locklear was found in the passenger seat with “visible bruising to her face.”

Sealey said Friday that an autopsy confirmed that Locklear had been beaten to death.
