From his hospital bed at Duke University Medical Center, 36-year-old Frederick M. Locklear, alert but in obvious pain, said, “I didn’t see it coming. All I heard was a ‘bam’ and that was it.”
Killed in the wreck were Locklear’s girlfriend, Virginia Carol Locklear, 37, of 424 Cunningham Circle, Lumberton, and his friend, Marie D. Locklear, 49, of 609 McInnis St., Pembroke.
Locklear is suffering from six broken vertebrae. He said he has had two procedures done to fix damage to one of his kidneys and an artery near his heart.
“I can’t hardly move,” Locklear said in a raspy voice. “I’m in a lot of pain.”
Locklear and the two women were riding their Harley-Davidson motorcycles along Third Street at about 11:04 p.m. Friday when a white four-door Saturn struck the group. Investigators say the car was traveling in excess of 100 mph through downtown Pembroke.
Lawmen have arrested Julie Shaw Miller, 40, of Mount Pleasant, S.C., and charged her with two counts of involuntary manslaughter, and one count of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious bodily injury.
At a bond hearing Monday, District Court Judge Jeff Moore refused to reduce Miller’s bond. She remains lodged at the Robeson County jail under a $1,250,000 bond.
Pembroke Police Chief Dwayne Hunt said the riders were struck after Miller’s car became airborne as she flew over the railroad tracks that cross Third Street, or N.C. 711.
Hunt said Miller was traveling alone in the vehicle and that there is no evidence she was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Lawmen continue to investigate the crash, and have not ruled out a mechanical malfunction.
Miller told police she has no recollection of driving so fast and no recollection of the collision, Hunt said.
Police said the cyclists were turning into The Spirit convenience store before they were struck. Virginia Locklear was a passenger on Frederick Locklear’s bike and Marie Locklear was riding her motorcycle alone.
“She was a real good friend,” Locklear said of Marie. “You couldn’t ask for a better friend.”
Virginia Locklear was Frederick’s girlfriend and a long-time employee of the Village Inn restaurant. The restaurant stayed closed on Saturday in her honor. She was attending college with plans to become a registered nurse.
The funeral for Marie Locklear will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Prospect United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the White Hill Church Cemetery.
Funeral services for Virginia Locklear will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Revels Funeral Home Chapel in Lumberton. Burial will follow in the Evers Family Cemetery.
Frederick Locklear said he has been touched by the outpouring of support he has received from family members and residents within the community.
“I’m glad that a lot of people care about me,” he said. He talked about the importance of other drivers keeping an eye out for motorcycle riders.
“Don’t be acting foolish when people are around on motorcycles.”
