Le'Quan McNeill, her soft spoken eight year old, was the recipient of no less than six awards at a recent ceremony at North Laurinburg Elementary School, where he is a rising fourth grader.
"I am very proud of him," his mother said. "We tried to steer Le'Quan and his sister in the right direction, and kept them in the books."
Le'Quan received the Certificate of Excellence award for the highest academic average in his class; a Certificate of Excellence for a high score of "4" in both reading and math in End of Grade Testing; a Language Arts Achievement Certificate in recognition of outstanding achievement; and an Outstanding Achievement Award. He also received a Sportsmanship Certificate Award and a Citizenship Certificate in recognition of "exemplary behavior and valuable services rendered to North Laurinburg School."
Not to be outdone, Le'Quan's sister Azia McNeill brought home her share of awards as well. The 14-year old rising ninth grader received numerous honors at Spring Hill Middle School including Best All Around Cheerleader, a Girls' Basketball Achievement Award, and a Certificate of Appreciation for "Great hugs and a great attitude." She also earned an Outstanding Academic Achievement Award and a Certificate of Achievement for the A-B Honor Roll, presented by Principal Beth Ammons.
And then there was the bicycle.
"The Kiwanis Club offered a free bicycle in a drawing that consisted of students who achieved a grade '3' or '4' in End of Grade testing," Melissa McNeill said, "and Le'Quan's name was picked."
Le'Quan, a Pokemon fan, was happy to receive the bike.
"It's bright red, and was made by the 'Next' bicycle company," he said. "It's real nice and it rides smooth."
Azia hopes to be a pediatrician, while Le'Quan has not yet decided on a career.
