The Scotland High School baseball team celebrated the 2009 season with its annual banquet at General McArthur’s on Wednesday. Scotland came back from a start that is below the SHS standard — 7-4 overall, 3-2 in the Mid-Southeastern 4-A Conference — to win the M-SEC regular-season title with a record of 12-2. The Scots then made a run to the third round of the N.C. 4-A playoffs, finally losing to a stacked Hoggard of Wilmington team in the third round. Scotland head coach Tommy Britt thanked all of the coaches in the program at Wednesday’s banquet before saying, “It’s all about the program. It’s not about the jayvee, the ninth-grade or the varsity... It’s about the total program.” Britt praised his players for sticking together and turning the season around to win perhaps the school’s most unlikely conference title. “This will be a group I’ll never forget,” he said. “We’ve had some good groups come through here; the 2006 championship team stands out. You guys rank up there with any of them because of the way you played together.”
