Golfers between the ages of 10 and 18 will had the chance to compete this weekend for a spot at the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships at the PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., in July.

Junior golfers within the North Carolina East District , which includes Scotland, Person, Durham, Wake, Harnette, and Hoke counties must qualify at a tournament planned today and Sunday at Scotch Meadows Country Club, according to Laurinburg's Donald Barringer, NC East Optimist District chairman.

Organizers made plans to accommodate up to 80 young golfers. The public is welcome to watch.

"Twelve or more junior golfers will qualify for the event in Florida," Barringer said.

It is the first time the event will be held in Laurinburg.

"It is always held in the middle part of the state," Laurinburg Optimist Ron Riggins said. "Donald worked really hard to get the event to come to Laurinburg."

The event is slated to come back to Laurinburg next year as well, according to Riggins.

"We are trying really to promote this golf tournament and draw more and more young golfers here next year," he said.

There will also be a banquet for the Optimist Club volunteers and for the players and families at the Hampton Inn in Laurinburg. A small fee will apply for family and friends of the players.

The public is invited to attend the tournament and watch.

"We want the people of Laurinburg and Scotland County to go see some really good golfers Saturday and Sunday," Riggins said.

"There will be junior golfers that will play golf in college or go pro at this golf tournament," Barringer said.

The purposes of Optimist International include: the development of optimism as a philosophy of life utilizing the tenets of the Optimism Creed; promoting an active interest in good government and civic affairs; inspiring respect for the law, promoting patriotism and work for international accord and friendship among all people, aiding and encouraging the development of youth, in the behalf that the giving of one's self in service to others will advance the well-being of humankind, community life and the world.
