"This beautiful quilt, in Hummingbird Treasure design, features birds, flowers, and foliage in a deep dusty rose against a white background," event co-chairperson Jane Callahan said. "The reverse side is solid cream."
Proceeds from the tournament and raffle are to benefit the ministry of Faith Presbyterian Church with one tenth of the amount going to Scotland Community Health Clinic, a non-profit program that provides free health care to the uninsured and needy in the county.
"This is such a great opportunity for Faith Presbyterian Church to reach out and help those who need help the most in these hard economic times," Callahan said. "We feel that Scotland Community Health Clinic is one of the best choices we could make for the services they provide."
Buying raffle tickets for the quilt is a great value, according to Callahan.
"The quilt is priced at $800," Callahan said, "but raffle tickets are just $2 apiece. The lucky ticket holder does not have to be present to win when the drawing is held at the golf tournament."
The queen-sized, reversible quilt was created by Pennsylvania resident Katie Stoltzfus, who learned traditional Amish quilting from her mother. Country Lane Quilts in Leola, Pa. was founded by Stoltzfus in 1989.
Brenda McLucas of Laurinburg purchased the quilt from Stoltzfus, a personal friend.
"I chose this quilt because of its very striking design," McLucas said, "with its deep burgundy, hunter green and hummingbirds. It has a beautiful presentation."
The quiltmaker's life was one of those affected by the tragedy at the West Nickel Mines School on Oct. 2, 2006, when five young girls died and several others were injured as the result of a random act of violence by a deranged gunman.
"Two of Katie's granddaughters were victims in the shooting," McLucas said. "One died, and the other was seriously injured."
Tickets for the raffle are available by calling Barbara McGirt at 276-2511 or 276-9311. Other members of Faith Presbyterian Church will also have tickets for sale.
The format for the golf tournament will be Captain's Choice, with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Prices are $60 per person, which includes a light meal after play prepared by the Presbyterian Women of Faith. Drinks and snacks are provided during play and prizes will be awarded for longest drives, longest putts, and more.
"This will be a great event, and we encourage everyone to come out and enjoy the tournament," Callahan said. "We have traditional prizes to give away, but we also have some unique offerings as well. We're different, but we have a lot of fun."
Tournament brochures are available at Scotch Meadows Country Club, or by calling Callahan at 276-2016.
