The Sandhills Lightning 13-U travel baseball team came home with a first-place finish in the USSSA Baseball HPBC Big South Challenge, held in Greensboro on Saturday and Sunday.

The Lightning opened against the Diamond Dawgs of Star on Saturday but took a 4-2 defeat. Tristan Helms had an RBI double and Dalton Bullard was 3-for-3 at the plate.

The second game of pool play was against the Tri-County Timberwolves, where the Lightning took a 12-5 victory to earn a three seed going into Sunday’s Championship brackets.

The Lightning took a 12-11 victory over Tri-County on Sunday in a game that went to extra innings. Sandhills was led offensively by Helms, who had a three-run double and went 3-for-5. Hayden Buffkin, Matt Epley, Chris Dejak and Joseph Murphy all contributed RBIs. Walker Davis had a double and a key bunt to advance the winning run in the eighth inning.

The Lightning beat the Richmond Rockies 12-3 in the semifinals. Dejak got the win, and Epley hit a two-run home run (outside-the-park). Hayden Buffkin hit a pair of doubles, and Dalton Bullard had a pair of two-run singles. Helms was 3-for-4 with a double and one RBI. Walker Davis had two hits.

The Lightning took an 8-2 victory over the Randolph Stix in the championship game. Buffkin went 4-for-4 with a three-run homer and a solo home run. Epley had a two-run homer and an RBI single. Dejak doubled and Embler, Helms, Davis and Grant English had one hit apiece.
