New York native Dr. Jennifer Gallub is adjusting well to her position as the most recent pediatrician to join the staff of Purcell Clinic in Laurinburg.

"I'm having a great time here in Scotland County," Gallub said. "I've enjoyed meeting the patients and their families I've seen, as well as working with the other six physicians on staff here. Everything has been good."

A native of Long Island, N.Y., Gallub graduated from the Downstate College of Medicine in Brooklyn, N.Y. before completing postgraduate training in the Jacobi Medical Center at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, N.Y. She was chief resident in the department of pediatrics before beginning her first practice in Laurinburg last autumn.

While she has seen little difference when comparing the attitudes of patients in New York and Scotland County, Gallub said that the type of ailments and injuries suffered by the different groups has been in surprising contrast to each other.

"In New York we treat a lot of children for injuries that would occur in a more urban environment, such as being injured by a moving vehicle," she said. "But here, the ailments are of a more rural nature. After coming here I had my first experience removing ticks, for example. And treating someone for poison ivy is generally not a priority in urban New York."

Purcell Clinic Senior Partner Dr. James Smithwick was happy to welcome Gallub to the staff.

"We are delighted to have her," Smithwick said. "She has lots of energy, and is enthusiastic and well trained. Dr. Galub has been a tremendous asset to us at the clinic."

Smithwick laughed when asked why several months had passed before a nameplate was prepared for Galub's name to be displayed outside the clinic doors.

"She wasn't on probation or anything," Smithwick said. "There was a delay in getting the sign prepared because the holes weren't in the right place. That's all."

Gallub sees young patients of all ages, from newborns to college students.

"I love to see patients continue to come to the same pediatrician even after they get older," Gallub said. "Some feel a sense of comfort by continuing to visit the doctor they've had their entire lives; that's a nice thing to see."

The Purcell Clinic is located at 418 South King St. in Laurinburg.
