Dozens of Scotland High School students in the graduating class of 2009 were honored for their scholastic and athletic achievements Thursday evening during the school's annual senior awards program.

Approximately $2,249,200 in scholarships and awards was earned by this year's senior class, as SHS Scholarship Coordinator Tiari Gladney put it, "in spite of the bad economy."

"(These students) have certainly worked hard ... and the economy did not effect the amount of money they received this year," Gladney noted.

The first student to be honored on the evening was William Tyson, recognized for his steadfastness which resulted in perfect attendance throughout his four years in high school. Tyson was the only student to achieve perfect attendance.

Receiving the first ever Luis Gonzalez Educational Foundation Memorial Scholarship, in honor of the late Luis Gonzalez who would have graduated with the class of 2009, was Cecily Morgan. Gonzalez lost his battle with cancer on August 12 of 2008.

Victoria Morrow and Carl Rosman, the student-athletes with the highest academic averages, were given the Superintendent's Scholar Athlete Award in recognition of that achievement.
