The boys, ages 3 and 6, sustained non-life-threatening injuries from a collision on N.C. 211, according to a patrol spokesperson. The near head-on collision occurred at about 2:30 p.m.
The spokesperson said 28-year old Robert Easterling of Laurinburg, was traveling north in a Dodge Neon with three children in his car.
Easterling turned to face the children in the back seat and crossed over the centerline, the report said.
Betty Ingold, 60, of Polkton, saw the Neon cross into her lane. She swerved to avoid Easterling but his Neon collided with her Honda SUV
Easterling’s two stepchildren were seriously injured in the accident. The 6-year-old was flown to New Hanover Regional Medical Center. The 3-year-old was transported to Brunswick Community Hospital in Supply and then airlifted to Chapel Hill.
Easterling was cited by the Highway Patrol for reckless driving and for not properly restraining the 3-year old in a safety seat, the spokesperson said.
The third child in the vehicle – a 1-year old girl – was not seriously injured.
A passenger in Ingold’s SUV broke her foot in the crash, the spokesperson said.
