I would like to comment especially on the passed anti-smoking bill, outlawing smoking in all restaurants and bars in North Carolina. I am not a smoker, but the constant attack on individual rights is making me write this letter, realizing that many will not agree with me.
The article stated that this was a great accomplishment. I know many believe this bill will improve public health, but as with many things, what sounds like a good idea, will have unintended consequences. The problem with such bills is, they always take away another right of the individual, something we as Americans should stand against if we believe in individual rights and freedom. So I ask why is government in the business of taking away our liberties, so many fought and continue to die for?
I believe law makers have forgotten the Constitution and that it guarantees the rights of the individual. I am convinced this law was unnecessary. This matter could have been resolved by using a common sense approach providing a resolution for both non-smokers and smokers.
It is disheartening to see a product, which made North Carolina the great state it became, now condemned by many.
If tobacco is such a great health hazard and politicians are so concerned about our well being, should it not be declared an illegal substance by the North Carolina House and Senate?
Or could it be because the tax this product still brings to the coffers of the state is more important then the health of the public.
