McCoy is a resident of Laurinburg, mother of three, and a member of Solid Rock Missionary Baptist Church. Hattie Kershaw served as the 2008 NAACP 2009 Mother of the Year.
The Mother of the Year Program was held at the Solid Rock Missionary Baptist Church and was well attended by many members and friends.
The 2009 contestants were: Evelyn Allen, Very Bassett, Gertrude Ingram, Mabel Kelly, Norma Hill Leak, and Queen Long.
The first runner up was Queen Long of Spring Branch Missionary Baptist Churchp; and the second runner up was Norma Hill Leak of Galilee United Methodist Church
"We look forward to Mrs. Dorothy McCoy's successful reign as serving as a hopeful example to many others in our community," the organioztion said in a statement. "We would also like to thank all the mothers and others who contributed towards making this program a great success."
