Finishing the season like they started it, the Scotland High School JV softball team leveled Jack Britt on Friday in Fayetteville, winning by a borderline ridiculous 20-0 margin.

When a team scores 20 runs, you might expect the game's biggest contribution to be on offense, but it was pitcher Cori Newton, who threw a perfect five inning game (her second and the Scots' fourth of the year) who stole the spotlight from the Scotland offense.

Newton struck out 10 Bucs batters, and allowed no runs on no hits with no errors during the mercy rule stunted game.

"This was a great way to end the season," said Scots head coach Joel McCanna, who had emphasized to his team all week the importance of winning their final game, and completing an undefeated, 15-0 season.

This undefeated season makes it the second season in a row during which the Scots have gone without a loss in Mid-Southeastern Conference play. Last season's team lost out of conference against Pine Forest for its only loss.

"It is easy to take a day off when you're winning like they did," said McCanna, who praised his team for playing hard "pretty much all season."

Scotland scored a single run in the first, seven in the second, six in the third, one in the fourth and five in the fifth, trying their best to let off of the gas down the stretch against a thoroughly defeated opponent.

Courtney Collins (4-for-5) and Alexis Mishue (3-for-3) both crossed home plate twice for the Scots, while Kayla Dees (2-for-4) scored three times and Ayanna Morrison (2-for-3) scored once.

Jack Britt committed seven errors, leading to their rapid downfall against the conference champs, who notched 14 hits to go with walks and three strikeouts.

The stat that, perhaps, tells the most about the nature of the 2009 Scotland JV softball team is their final runs scored for and against totals.

Scotland players made it home 185 times in '09, all while allowing only 14 opponent runs.

"They were a good group of girls ... and were unique in what they did," said McCanna.
