WADESBORO — A proud, championship tradition continues at Carver, where the school's softball team captured its fifth conference championship in seven seasons with a 4-0 win at Anson on Tuesday.
Bailey Jacobs pitched a two-hit shutout for the Eagles, who finish their season at 12-1 by avenging their only loss of the season, a 6-4 setback to Anson that occurred early in the season.
"We believed from early on that we were the team to beat," said Carver head coach Scottie Jacobs. "We went over there in the first game of the season and lost.
"We were able to make it a different outcome this time, and we're just happy to win another one for Carver."
Destiny Morrison went 4-for-4 with a triple and a double to lead Carver at the plate. Sarah Campbell was 2-for-2 with a double, and Hannah Bray went 2-for-4 with a triple.
Libby Ingram was also 2-for-4, Grace McCormick went 1-for-3 and Katelyn Hunt and Abby Bray were both 1-for-4.
A lot of people are still thinking about the late C.J. McLaurin, an eighth-grader at Carver who was a multi-sport standout. The Carver softball players are among those still mourning his passing.
"The girls wanted to dedicate this game to C.J. McLaurin," said Jacobs. "He was their classmate, and they dedicated this win and the season to his memory."
