Gardener Steve Cole tends his plot of squash, peppers, pole beans and more.
A sprinkler system, a trailer for tool storage, and a new covered area with picnic tables are some of the many improvements this year at the Laurinburg community gardens, according to event organizer Sam Thompson.
"We've made a lot of progress since last year," Thompson said. "We have a new method of watering the gardens, so gardeners don't have to pull hoses around to their plots, and workers are converting an old trailer for use as a tool shed. Both are designed to ease the work of our gardeners, so that they can better concentrate on producing those delicious vegetables that grew so well last year."
Another addition is the covered picnic area located on the grounds. The structure was done as a eagle scout project by Troop 420 in Laurinburg.
"We were very fortunate and happy to have this group of young people assist us in this way," Thompson said. "They did a great job."
Steve Cole of Laurinburg is the president of Simmons Heating and Air. An experienced gardener, he and his wife Peggy are first year planters at the community gardens.
"I heard about this too late to take part last year," Cole said, "but this year we decided to dive in. We've planted squash, zucchini, cucumbers, pole beans, herbs and more; so far, everything is coming along nicely."
Plots of 15 x 20 or 15 x 40 feet are available.
"There are still some sections for rent," Thomson said. "Everything is better than ever, so if you are thinking about gardening, and want an inexpensive way to join in with plenty of friendly, experienced people participating, then I hope you will sign up with us."
To join, go to www.activelaurinburg.com and click on the garden page, or go directly to www.activelaurinburg.com/gardenpage1.html to decide on a plot. You may also stop by the Laurinburg Presbyterian Church office and complete a paper form.
