With a rash of recent shootings, including a shootout over the weekend, some Scotland leaders are saying "enough is enough."

There is an emergency meeting planned Saturday to discuss the upswing in gun violence here.

The meeting will be held at 11 a.m. at Union Grove Baptist Church in Laurinburg. The Scotland County Ministerial Alliance and the Scotland County chapter of the NAACP are the primary organizers. The public is welcome.

"This kind of violence has gotten out of control," said state Rep. Garland Pierce. "The kind of gun play that we have seen in recent weeks seems to be escalating and we need to come together as a community to talk about it."

Pierce, who serves as president of the county NAACP, said he has asked that officials from the Laurinburg Police Department and sheriff's office attend.

"Of course this is not about assigning blame," Pierce said. "It is an effort to bring all the stake holders in the community together to solve this. These kind of incidents have almost become the norm and that is sad."

The most recent shooting occurred Saturday, between two Laurinburg teens in McDuffie Village, both of whom are in custody, according to a police report.

Police blame the incident on a previous shooting.

The report said 20-year old Artemus Antajuan Robinson, of 9061 Captain Street, was struck by a bullet on Carver Street following a confrontation with several others early that morning.

Dejarius Rudell Fields, 19, of 514 Shaw Drive and Letrell DeShawn Graham, also 19, of 1217 North Main Street, were both arrested following the incident, according to the report.

Fields is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill and discharging a weapon into occupied property, the report said. He is in Scotland County jail under a $100,000 secured bond.

"I don't even know that any of us have the answers to these issue, but we need to start looking for solutions," Pierce said. "What troubles me the most is that an innocent person is going to be hurt. That is why I want us to sit down and see what we can do to make this a community where you feel safe to walk the streets and you are not living in fear of a stray bullet."
