The Laurinburg Downtown Revitalization Corporation may have just the thing for students who in need of a break.

The Children's Arts Festival Day, sponsored by the LDRC promotions committee, is going to be held in downtown Laurinburg on May 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The festival will showcase students' hard-work in the art room while giving children fun activities.

"The teachers are definitely excited to have something to showcase their kids art work," said Barbara Alexander, administrative assistant for LDRC. The teachers have told her that the children are also excited about the event.

"Some kids are working on building furniture" Alexander said. The furniture will be placed in the Storytelling Arts Center

The LDRC has asked the art department at each elementary school to participate in the event, with only one school declining to be involved.

Each store will have art hanging in its windows and around the business. The art will then be judged by the merchant, and the top three works in each store will be included in a 16-month calendar to be sold afterward.

Businesses participating in the event will provide a number of activities for children, such as face painting, chalk drawings and balloon animals.

A number of downtown merchants will also host events in their stores.

Food vendors and larger events will be located in the AB Gibson parking lot and Roper Street, especially as Main Street will remain open throughout the four-hour event.

"We felt like if we closed Main, it would be harder to get to," Alexander said. She said that police have signed off on the idea but that closing the street may be a consideration for future children's festivals.

Rober Street, however, will be closed from Main to Atkinson.

Some of these larger activities include a set up by The Lumber River State Park, Jim's Gems of Aberdeen, Party Spirit, Sky High Jumpers, Melody Ebert Jumpers, the Fire and Police Department and performances by Top Dawgz Cheer Gym, Karen Gibson School of Dance, Rhythm Explosion Cloggers, and Crystal McInnis School of Dance.

Alexander said a lot of people were committing to be involved in this inaugural event.

"Thus far, we have had a great response from non-profits and businesses in the community," Alexander said. "We have commitments from Parks and Recreation, Smart Start, Scots 4 Youth, 4-H, Hospice, the Scotland County/Laurinburg Area Chamber of Commerce, Child Care Directions, the Red Cross, the Literacy Council, Trinity Presbyterian Day Care, Habitat for Humanity, and Hospice. The stores hosting art work include: Scotland Drugs, Shirt Tales, White's Jewel Shop, The Daily Grind, Top Dawgz Cheer Gym, the Plaid Piper, Harley's Tuxedos and Gifts, Time and Again, Sugar and Spice, Art by Design, The Storytelling Arts Center of the Southeast, Christian Books, Bill's Mattress and Hi Lites."

Alexander is uncertain how the event will turn out.

"This is the first year we've done it," she said.

She has confidence in the event, however.

"I really think its going to be good," Alexander said.
