Emerging and established talent from Covington Street Elementary School in Laurinburg will be showcased by the school's next door neighbor, St. David's Episcopal Church, when the latter displays 38 pieces of student and staff artwork in a first time art show today and Saturday.
The Rev. Marty Stebbins is the vicar for St. David's Episcopal Church.
"St. David’s Episcopal Church is proud to host an art show and sale that will present the artistic abilities of the students of Covington Street School," Stebbins said. "The show begins Friday evening with a “Meet the Artist” event from 5:30 to 7 p.m., where the community can ask the students about their art."
Students who have submitted their artwork range from kindergarten through fifth grade.
"All artwork is available for purchase, with 100 percent of the proceeds to be donated to the PTA of Covington Street School," Stebbins said. "The art sale will continue on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m."
The principal of Covington Street School, Sandra Wilcher, has donated an oil painting titled "Country Sunset" to be raffled off Saturday afternoon. Raffle tickets are $2 each and will be sold until noon Saturday, when Wilcher's painting is presented.
"I am so excited for the children of Covington Street Elementary School to have this opportunity to show their work at St. David's," Wilcher said. "I hope this is the first of many annual shows, and I love the idea of the kids being able to express themselves in art. It's just a great experience."
St. David’s, a business partner with Covington Street Elementary School, is located next door to the school at 506 Azure Court on the corner of Covington and Azure.
"I really hope the community can come out Friday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. to meet the artists," Stebbins said. "If you cannot come until Saturday, all artwork, including the pieces purchased on Friday, will still be on display. We hope to see you there."
Punch and cookies will be provided during the event.
