Lester Roe Pickard

Lester Roe Pickard, age 81 of Laurinburg, passed away on Saturday, April 25, 2009.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at the Mt. Olive Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Shelby Stephens. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.

Mr. Pickard was born Sept. 23, 1927 in Alamance County, son of the late Robert and Betty Buckner Pickard. He was the devoted husband of the late Jacqueline Copeland Pickard. He retired from L.O.F. Glass Company after many years of dedicated service. Mr. Pickard was a life long member of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church. He love the outdoors and working in his garden.

In addition to his parents, Lester was also preceded in death by brothers Carson Pickard, J.W. Pickard, and Dick Pickard and sisters Dorothy Lemonds and Shirley Yates.

He is survived by his son, Kenneth Pickard; brothers Hollan Pickard and wife Mary of Graham, and Jack Pickard and wife Linda of Graham; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family requests that memorials be made to the Mt. Olive Baptist Church Memorial Fund, 5043 Mt. Olive Church Road, Pittsboro, N.C. 27340 or to the charity of one¹s choice.

Charles Eugene "Gene" Sligh

Charles Eugene "Gene" Sligh, 89, of Lanoca Avenue, Laurinburg, died Monday, April 27 at Morrison Manor following a short illness.

Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery.

He is survived by a daughter, Betty Leviner and husband, Mickey of Florence, S.C.; a son, Mac Sligh and wife, Nell of Jacksonville; a brother, Eddie Sligh of Concord; a sister, Laura Weikel; and four grandchildren, Jamie Leviner and Emily Leviner of Florence, Cal Sligh of Jacksonville, and Margaret Parkman. He was preceded in death by his son, Charles E. Chuck Sligh and his wife, Mary Elizabeth Mary Lib McCallum Sligh, and three brothers, Billy Sligh, Freeman Sligh and Carlton Sligh.

He was born Feb. 29, 1920 in McColl, S.C., a son of the late C. O. and Myrtle Freeman Sligh. He graduated from McColl High School, Wingate Junior College, and Gupton-Jones Embalming School. Gene faithfully served his country in the U.S. Army for four years in Northern Ireland, England, North Africa, Sardinia, and Italy during World War II, and moved to Laurinburg in 1946 where he served as an ambulance driver and a licensed funeral director and embalmer for McDougald Funeral Home. In 1953 he began serving with the U.S. Post Office, walking a delivery route that would total 2 and one half times around the world before his retirement after 30 years of dedicated service.

He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, the Laurinburg Masonic Lodge, and an active member of the Laurinburg Kiwanis Club.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.

Edna Bernice Horner

Mrs. Edna Bernice Horner, 90, of Laurinburg died Sunday, April 26, at Century Care.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Margaret Ponder and husband Larry of Laurinburg; two grandchildren, Sherri Cole and Chylene Walters; and two great-grandchildren, Landon Coyne and Ryle Coyne.

Born Jan. 2, 1919 in Farmington, Mo., she was a daughter of the late Gilbert and Cecilia Gibbar Henderson. For many years she sewed for International Shoe Company in Maryville, Mo. In Laurinburg she was a former member of the Young at Hearts Senior Citizens.

McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium is serving the family.
