Scotland and South View will battle at Laurinburg's Legion Park on Friday evening at 5 p.m. SHS head coach David Barnes does not expect a repeat of the first meeting between the two teams.
"We did everything about as poorly as you could do it the first time we played them," Barnes said. "I told our players that I thought we were at least 10 runs better than (South View), and I meant that."
Scotland's 15-run margin of victory on Monday came through steady pitching and big days at the plate by five SHS players. Casion Murphy went 3-for-4 and scored four runs for Scotland, and Kwashawn Quick, Kris Tyndall and Harley Clark had two hits apiece.
Johnny Mintz also had two hits; the freshman slugger hit a homer and a double off Hoke pitching after belting a three-run homer in his only at-bat for the Scotland junior-varsity team on Friday in a win over Douglas Byrd. It's safe to assume Mintz will be the only player in the Scotland program this spring to have homered at both McCoy Field and Legion Park.
Logan Weagraff started and pitched two innings to get the win, striking out two and allowing one hit. Tyndall threw two innings and gave up his team's only run on two hits and two walks while striking out three. Preston Parker worked a perfect fifth inning, striking out one Hoke batter.
"Logan went out early and set the tone for us ... We swung the bats well, and we hit the ball hard," said Barnes. "They made some errors, but most of the runs we produced came off hits, not errors."
