Margaret Weir Bennett

Mrs. Margaret Weir Bennett, 90, of Scotia Village in Laurinburg died Wednesday, April 15.

A memorial service will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the First Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. C. F. McDowell, III. A visitation will follow the memorial service in the fellowship hall.

Margaret is survived by three daughters, Patricia Uffelman and husband, Tom of Charleston, S.C., Katherine Gregg and husband, Carl Colson of Buckhannon, W.Va., and Susan Tucker and husband, John of Plymouth, N.H.; a grandson, Dr. Jeff Bennett and wife, Jennifer of Charleston; and a great-granddaughter, Natalie Bennett of Charleston.

Margaret was born August 7, 1918 in Cuthbert, Ga., a daughter of the late Harry C. and Jo Ella Kerr Weir, and grew up in Kentucky. She attended Valdosta State College and Emory University, and married the late Dr. Carl Bennett.

She was a retired cataloger for DeTamble Library at St. Andrews Presbyterian College, was an active member of the Democratic Women of Scotland County, and a volunteer at the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store.

An active member of the First Baptist Church, she was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class, and volunteered in many church related activities.

Dr. Thomas “Tom” Wesley Weaver

Dr. Thomas “Tom” Wesley Weaver of Maxton passed away on Thursday, April 16, 2009 at the age of 63.

The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, 2009 at the First Baptist Church of Maxton officiated by the Rev. Carl Redding, the Rev. L.J. Young and the Rev. Dennis Knox. Burial will follow the service at Oak Grove Cemetery in Maxton.

Dr. Weaver was a retired pastor serving the Lord in the Southern Baptist and the International Pentecostal Holiness Conferences. He loved music and playing praises on the keyboard. Dr. Weaver was a member of the First Baptist Church of Maxton. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother.

He is survived by his wife of l6 years, Mrs. Frankie Whitehead Weaver of the home; sons Lynn Spry and wife Elizabeth of Laurinburg, Cliff Spry of Fayetteville, and Kevin Spry and wife Kimberly of Maxton; a daughter, Mona Weaver of California; several brothers and sisters, including Mary Childs and husband Leroy and Joy James, all of California; and his five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. prior to the service on Saturday at the First Baptist Church of Maxton.

Christopher Junior McLaurin

Christopher Junior McLaurin, 14, of Laurinburg died April 12, 2009 at Scotland Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held on April 18 at 1 p.m. at Carver Middle School in Laurel Hill with burial to follow at Stewartsville Cemetery in Laurinburg. Visitation will be at Purcell Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m. on April 17, 2009.

Survivors are his mother, Christalh Jones Johnson and stepfather Malcolm Johnson; his father, Eddie McLaurin and stepmother Debbie McLaurin; maternal grandparents James and Betty Smith and Jerry and Natalie WIlliams; paternal grandparents Peggy Simmons and Eddie F. McLaurin; stepgrandparents Bradford and Jan Johnson; a sister, Queen Johnson; brothers Labarrian Jones, Eddie III, Justice, TyEdrick, Kobe, and Jawaun McLaurin, and LaVondrick and JaMarion Pegues; great-grandmothers Lula Mae Jones and Betty Mae McKoy; and a great-grandfather, J.C. McKoy.
