A convicted murderer serving a life sentence at the Scotland County Correctional Facility attacked four prison guards with a razor on Saturday, a state Department of Correction spokesman said.

Omar Lionel Reed, 30, is charged with malicious conduct by a prisoner, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and two counts of assaulting government employees with a deadly weapon, according to a sheriff's report.

Correction officers were attempting to take Reed back to his cell from an outdoor recreational activity when he attacked the guards, said DOC spokesman Keith Acree.

Reed had apparently concealed a razor in his hand, which he used to assault the prison employees, Acree said.

Three were injured in the attack - one on the face, one on the arm and one on the leg. The most serious injury required stitches and all of the officers have been treated and released, according to Acree.

Reed is a known-gang leader for the Bloods in Durham, Acree said.

He was convicted in June 2000 of first-degree murder in the shooting death of William Teasley.

Teasley, 31, was killed at his Enterprise Street home during what officials believe was a home invasion.

Reed has assualted government officials before, Acree said.

At his sentencing for murder, Reed used a homemade knife to escape from the Durham County Courthouse. He was recaptured several hours later, where he told officers he "was not going back" to prison.

According to state records, Reed has committed 68 infractions in his six-years as an inmate, including involvement with a gang and sexual acts. His most recent transgressions were setting a fire, throwing liquids at prison staff and tampering with a lock in February 2008.

Reed has more 30 criminal convictions, all committed before his 23rd birthday, according to records.
