Two big innings were enough to see the Scotland ninth grade baseball team through to an easy 8-1 victory over the visiting Richmond County Gold squad on Thursday.

SHS pitcher Chris Tyndall was awarded the victory after allowing only one hit over five innings, striking out two with no walks and an unearned run.

Scotland players struck out only two times during the game, and managed to put the ball in play throughout. The Scots finally broke through in the second inning with four runs.

Scotland would not score again until the fourth inning, during which they put another four runs between themselves and the rival Raiders.

Daniel Walters, recently down from a successful stint with the JV team, was the hero on offense for Scotland, going 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles on the day.

Also contributing to the Scotland rout were Jeremy Osteen (2-for-4) and Johnny Mintz (2-for-4).

"It felt like we had a little breathing room after the fourth inning," said Scots coach David Barnes following the game.

For that reason most Scotland players saw time on the field during the big win.

Richmond plated their sole run in the fifth inning after an SHS error.

The Scots will be off next week for Spring Break before returning to practice on Monday and then taking on the tough Richmond County Green team on Tuesday beginning at 4:30 p.m. at Hamlet's Memorial Park.

Barnes has told his players to practice on their own over the break, as they will need to be in top form against Richmond Green.

"I think they're the second best team in the conference," said Barnes.

With Thursday's win Scotland runs its record out to 8-1 on the year.
