Habitat for Humanity is set to build a home for Marilyn Herbin and her family.

Herbin, who works for Hospice of Scotland County, lost her home in a fire in 2006. She applied for a Habitat house in March 2008 and was approved in June.

“I’ve prayed to God to help me build a home on the site where I was born. After losing all I had in a fire. I have cried and prayed many nights for the restoration of my house. Currently the ruin from the fire of total burnout is what is left on my land. I believe he has sent Habitat for Humanity to do just that,” says Marilyn Herbin.

The building of this home, which starts on Saturday, is one of two projects planned for the 2009 calendar year by Habitat for Humanity of the NC Sandhills in Aberdeen.

Herbin started on her sweat equity immediately receiving her acceptance letter; she is required to complete 300 hours and is well on her way to completion of those hours. The land where the house will be built is family land in Hamlet and she will be living next to her cousin.

Judie Wiggins, Volunteer Coordinator, is busy finding groups that are interested in coming out to lend a hand on the construction site. A group of about 8-10 people from Continuum Care Services has already signed up for the first team build this Saturday’s kickoff. Any groups interested in helping out, contact Judie Wiggins at the information below.

Swinging a hammer isn’t the only way to volunteer to help out with this project. Every build day needs a mid-morning snack and a lunch to feed the construction volunteers. Past lunch donors have included Andy’s Cheesesteaks, Dominos Pizza, Sonic Drive In and Pizza Hut as well as many civic organizations. Individuals and churches are encouraged to sign up for lunches as well. Two dozen homemade muffins make the perfect mid-morning snack for busy construction volunteers. If interested in helping out with food, please contact Judie Wiggins at 295-1934 or jwiggins@sandhillshabitat.org

Habitat’s mission is to work with low-income people in the community by providing them an opportunity to own a house. Habitat is looking for volunteers and stresses that no experience is necessary. The worksite is fun place for fellowship, friends and some hard work.
