Donald Ray Berry

Donald Ray Berry, 51 of Laurinburg, passed away on Friday, April 3, 2009.

A memorial service will be held at 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 9, 2009 at the Richard Boles Funeral Service Chapel officiated by the Rev. Earl Henderson.

Donald was born January 6, 1958 in Scotland County, son of Dora Sheppard Berry and the late J.W. Berry. He was a United States Army Veteran. Donald worked with Murphy Brown, Inc. and Mt. Airy Farms.

He was also preceded in death by a son, Damien Berry.

He is survived by his wife, Delores Locklear Berry; his daughters, Amanda Lea Berry of Chesapeake, Va. and Shannon Raye Berry of Laurinburg; his mother, Dora Sheppard Berry of Laurel Hill; brothers, Leroy Dunn, Thomas Dunn, Michael Dunn, James Berry and Bobby Berry; sisters, Charlie Ann Berry, Sharon Berry and Debra Berry; and two grandchildren, Rebekah Lynn Berry and Caleb James Maples.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. prior to the service on Thursday at Richard Boles Funeral Service.

Margaret Newton Gibson

Margaret Newton Gibson, 89 of Gibson, passed away at her home on Sunday, April 5, 2009 with her family by her side.

A service to celebrate her life will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 9, 2009 at the Springfield Church of God with the the Rev. Carl Fosdick and the Rev. Harry Clark officiating. Burial will follow at Pinecrest Cemetery in Gibson.

Mrs. Gibson was the daughter and last surviving of 12 children of the late James Preston and Blanche Adams Newton. Margaret was born on March 7, 1920 in the Newtonville Section of Marlboro County, S.C. In addition to her parents and siblings, she was preceded in death by her husband, Austin C. Gibson.

Margaret loved her family, immediate and extended, and delighted in their visits. She enjoyed working in the yard planting flowers and making the 100 plus year old house a home reminiscent of the warmth and friendliness of her childhood. Before her retirement, she had worked at Ingraham Watch Plant and Abbott Laboratories. She was an active member of the Springfield Church of God.

She is survived by her son, Jimmy Gibson and wife Karen of the home place in Gibson, her grandson, J.J. Gibson and wife Tina of Gibson; her step-grandsons, Brian McCue of Charlotte, Kevin McCue and wife Sandra of Sanford, and Marcus McCue and wife Allison of Raleigh; a granddaughter, Lisa Gibson, 13 great- grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, April 8 at Richard Boles Funeral Service.

Lessie Pankey

Ms. Lessie Pankey, 87, of 12180 Pankeytown Road, Laurinburg, died Friday, April 3, 2009 at Morrison Manor in Laurinburg. Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 8, 2009 at 12 noon at Allen CHapel A.M.E. Church in Laurinburg. The Rev. Stephen Lyons will officiate. Burial will be at the Pankey Family Cemetery in Laurinburg. Visitation will be Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at McPhatter Funeral Home in Laurel Hill from 6 to 7 p.m.

Survivors are one son, David Pankey, Jr. of Charlotte; four daughters, Francina Ellison, Juanita Kirkpatrick, and Deloris Monroe of Laurinburg and Antoinette Leak of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Beulah Whitley of Philadelphia, Pa. and Mary Lee of Baltimore, Md.; one brother, Roger Richardson of New Jersey; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

McPhatter Funeral Home is serving the family.

Addie Mason

Ms. Addie Mason, 87, of 403 Madera Ave., Laurinburg, died Monday, April 6, 2009 at Century Care.

Final arrangements will be announced by McPhatter Funeral Home.
