"I wish we could learn how to slide," Sellers said, only half-jokingly, following his team's 11-1 non-conference win over Pine Forest in six innings on Monday in Laurinburg. The Scots lost Alex Fricke to an ankle injury when he hurt himself sliding into second against the Trojans; Fricke is the third Scot in injure himself, or nearly become injured, when sliding into a base this season.
Besides that, Scotland has been nearly flawless. Monday's win improves the team's record to a perfect 10-0 this year.
"I thought we did a lot of things offensively well," said Sellers of Monday's win. "We fielded well, we made plays, we executed a 6-3-2 double play.
"We fielded up, checked the runner at third, threw to first, first got the out. Then the kid (at third base) took off running ... We executed it to the point where (catcher) Matt (Radford) was actually waiting for the runner to slide in."
Buddy Oxendine started and pitched two innings to get the win, striking out two and allowing three hits. Oxendine was also 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and a solo home run to right-center in the bottom of the sixth inning.
"Buddy Oxendine did a good job, threw strikes," said Sellers. "He also got a home run, which was our first home run on the season."
Will Gover went 2-for-4 and drove in four runs for Scotland. Gover also pitched the final three innings for the Scots, fanning five batters and allowing no runs on two hits. Fricke threw the third, striking out one and yielding one run on no hits and three walks.
Jay Coleman was 2-for-3 with a run scored for SHS, Tim Chavis went 2-for-3 with one RBI, Kyle Clark had an RBI double, was hit by a pitch and finished 2-for-3.
Alex Peele went 1-for-3 and stole two bases.
The jayvee Scots play at Hoke today at 5 p.m.
"It's kind of tough. Our starting first baseman, Alex Fricke, jammed his ankle on second base.
"Right now, he's day-to-day, and he's probably going to sit out tomorrow.
