The annual Laurinburg Area Campaign to support St. Andrews University hopes to raise $500,000 this year.

The effort kicked off Monday night with a reception in the Carol Grotnes Belk Main Room at the William Henry Belk Center.

“We are honored to have Terri and Bill Purcell as our 2013 Laurinburg Area Campaign co-chairs,” said President Paul Baldasare. “Bill and Terri have a longstanding connection to St. Andrews and strong community ties.”

Bill Purcell II is a lawyer in Laurinburg who has been honored with the Laurinburg Jaycees Distinguished Service Award and the Silver Beaver and God and Service Award from the Boy Scouts of America.

“We all know that St. Andrews distinguishes us from other small rural communities,” said Bill Purcell II. “It is a major employer, and brings in tourism dollars for athletic events and horse shows. It not only has an economic impact, but a cultural and lifestyle impact as well.”

St. Andrews holds a special place in Purcell’s memory.

“I grew up going to feed the ducks, going to day camps, playing basketball and we even had a Scout camp in the woods one summer,” he said. “When we returned to Laurinburg in 1990 with children of our own, St. Andrews remained a vital part of the community.”

Terri Purcell said that St. Andrews is filled with talented people willing to share with the community at no charge.

“They speak at Rotary and Kiwanis and the Pilot Clubs,” she said. “They teach and preach at our local churches and they bring wonderful speakers, artists and performers to our community.”

The campaign ends on May 31.During the silent phase, the campaign hasraised $227,162 from 152 donors, said Bill Purcell.

Helping the co-chairs are team leaders Julian Butler, Susan Covington, Mac Doubles, Jim and Lynn Mason, Ken Nichols, Sen. Bill Purcell, and Mike Vinson.
